Tools of the Trade

Description

Our summer assignment for Governor's School this year was "Tools of the Trade".

c: And I had absolutely no idea what to do, except for some reason I was dying to paint on hollow egg shells.
So I rummaged through the kitchen, and we only had three. o:
My stepmom showed me how to blow the yolk out of one of the eggs...And when I tried with the other two I failed miserably and they ended up cracking. xD
So I formed my idea for the assignment around the three eggshells I had, and pulled a little inspiration from biology.

This was my artist's statement:
"My hands are my ultimate tool. My art piece shows the tools that my hands were derived from in the natural history of our planet. It begins with the Tiktaalik, the earliest fish in our fossil record that has wrist bones. When it was discovered by paleontologists, a connection was immediately made between fish fins and the human hand. We have also discovered the genetics behind how our hands are built at the embryonic stage from experiments on chicken embryos. I included both of these tools used to show us the origin of our hands in my art piece. The egg on the far left shows present time when we have made these discoveries (featuring common tools used by paleontologists). The eggs to the right travel back in time. The one on the far right shows the Tiktaalik climbing into the egg, or "time capsule". Then it is fossilized in the middle egg, waiting to be discovered."

Blah.

So, materials include:
Chicken egg shells, watercolor & acrylic paint, micron pen, sculpey clay, doll hair, gel medium, hot glue (used to make the shape of the opening of the egg the Tiktaalik is climbing into), styrofoam (for the base), and everything is superglued to the base.

If you have any questions, please ask.

cx I was insanely happy with the way this turned out.

I took the photo at Ian's place with his papa's fancy camera. c:
By the way, you can see Ian's piece here -> [link]
It's also relative to evolution, and it's AWESOME. REALLY AWESOME.
